Please note that I am not now a Fellow of the Society of Designer Craftsmen.
I have been with the SDC since 1993 but, with great regret, I felt unable to renew my subscription this year as I have no wish to be associated with, what I perceive as, a lowering of standards. However, this in no way detracts from the artists linked to below, who are some of the finest in the country.
About the Society of Designer-Craftsmen
The Society of Designer-Craftsmen is the largest and oldest multi-craft society in the U.K..
The work of members ranges from ceramics, textiles and silversmithing to furniture, stained glass,
toymaking and wood, and includes many other disciplines. The aimof the Society is to emphasise
designer-making where innovation, originality and quality are paramount.
The Society is organised by craftsmen for craftsmen and is administered by a Council comprising
Fellows, Members, Licentiates and Associates.
Brief history
The Society was founded in 1888 by Walter Crane and William Morris and was formerly known
as The Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society. Its purpose was to give a voice to, and to organise
exhibitions for, the growing body of designer-makers of the time. Today, the Society still organises
an annual exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London.
